Time for a New Skate?

FR SPIN

New sheriff in town!

My quest for the perfect urban skate isn't exactly a smooth ride. Being a size 34 puts me in a tricky spot; after 25 years, I’m not exactly expecting a growth spurt, haha!

Luckily, there are perks: I can often shop at lower "junior" prices, but the designs usually let me down. Long live the kid prices, shame about the pink glitter… I’m all about sleek designs; the kind of skates that make you want to put D’Angelo on in the background.

For the past four years, I’ve been riding the Seba FR Deluxe 80 (size 36). They work fine with a pair of thick socks, but it’s time for the next step. I’m looking for something lighter, tighter, and simpler. High time for an integrated liner!?

The Shortlist

My eyes originally caught the FR SL, SL Speed, IGOR and SPIN. The lack of availability in my size meant a lot of these had to be crossed off the list.

That’s how I ended up with the FR SL Speed. To me, this model feels like the perfect "middle ground"—a Spin 2.0 of sorts. It’s light, has a super-stiff boot that molds to your foot, and the integrated Intuition liner is a massive upgrade.

Why the SL Speed?

Besides the carbon boot and the looks, the range of motion from the low profile—and the lack of a cuff—is a huge plus for me. Plus, the SL Speed is actually available in size 34.

I get that many people swear by a cuff for freeride, but I’m all about flow and speed while zipping through the streets of Ghent. Money doesn’t grow on trees, so I’m going to let this marinate for a bit. Look out for an update in a few months!

Lots of love,
Asena
